Instagram takes bite out of Vine in first week

Facebook’s Instagram video announcement last week went a long way in hurting its chief competitor Vine, a new study has shown.

According to data compiled by Marketing Land using Topsy, a tool designed to analyze social media shares, the number of links shared on Twitter to Vine videos fell off a cliff after Instagram’s new video-recording feature was announced on June 20. 130M users snapping photos, soon video on Instagram

Photo and now video posting social network Instagram is growing like a weed, its CEO said today. 
While introducing the new video feature, which lets users record quick 15-second clips, co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom noted that the company was up to 130 million users on the service. 
To put that number in perspective, Instagram announced that it had hit 100 million users just 3 months ago, making that around 10 million extra users a month. Perhaps making it all the more impressive, the company reported 80 million users last July. Continue reading

Today, in Facebook’s press event, the company just announced that its bringing video to Instagram with a brand new set of features. In what appears to be direct competition for Twitter’s rapidly growing Vine video sharing app, Instagram will soon allow users to share similar short video clips. On stage, Instagram demoed an updated iOS app that now includes a button for video capture that will allow users to create 15 second videos using multiple clips.

“Starting today, hashtags will be clickable on Facebook. Similar to other services like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, or Pinterest, hashtags on Facebook allow you to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion,” the company wrote in a blog post announcing the update. “When you click on a hashtag in Facebook, you’ll see a feed of what other people and Pages are saying about that event or topic.” Continue reading

Facebook starts verifying pages and profiles

Facebook said Wednesday that it has begun to verify the Facebook Pages and profiles of public figures.

“Today we’re launching verified Pages to help people find the authentic accounts of celebrities and other high-profile people and businesses on Facebook,” the company wrote in its announcement. “Verified Pages belong to a small group of prominent public figures (celebrities, journalists, government officials, popular brands and businesses) with large audiences.”
